Two Premieres in One Week!

It’s only a few weeks since Delta David Gier and the South Dakota Symphony premiered my Sinfonietta. Now I’m looking forward to two more world premieres: February 23, Sargent’s Women, a piano suite composed for and played by Yoonie Han; and then February 26, For Allegra, a song cycle originally composed for my daughter to sing, now in its first complete performance with soprano Laura Strickling. What a week it will be!  Find all the details under the Performances tab.

A Rich Year

The year now ending has been incredibly rich for me musically. I’ve composed at a faster pace than ever before: a full-length orchestra score (Sinfonietta), my first piece with integrated video (Face of the Deep for piano), more songs for my ongoing collaboration with poet/soprano Emma Stace Darling (Girl on Fire) and a third in my series of piano pieces Sargent’s Women (Miss Ellen Terry as Lady Macbeth).  My next three pieces also fell into place this year, auguring a rewarding 2017.  By the end of February I will have had three first performances – Sinfonietta, Sargent’s Women, and my song cycle For Allegra.  It’s a gratifying way to reflect as we celebrate the passing of the year!

A New York Premiere, one of many this season

A surprise New York Premiere adds to the excitement of the current season.  I composed the piano and video work Face of the Deep for the remarkable pianist Jenny Q. Chai, this past summer. She gave the premiere in Boston in September, and will play it again in Dayton in late October.  But she just announced that she’ll bring it to NYC on November 6!  It’s part of her program Aqua Alta – a provocative set of works about climate change and rising sea levels, and our relationship with water in general.  And this will be just one of four premieres this season, two of them New York: Face of the Deep; Reflexions for solo marimba; Sinfonietta for the South Dakota Symphony; and Miss Ellen Terry as Lady Macbeth,

Face of the Deep is set for its premiere

On August 24 I finished Face of the Deep, a new piano piece for Jenny Q. Chai, to be integrated with video, for her recital program Acqua Alta. No sooner had I finished the music than I was skyping with video editor Victoria Catherine Chan in Montreal. Victoria has made poetry of the video I’ve shot of water surfaces. I can’t wait for the premiere October 2 in Boston: I think music and image together have created a kind of lyricism new to my work. And now – back to my Sinfonietta!

Summertime, Composing Time

In the summer of 2016 I am diving into the longest docket of commissions ever. My time in July studying traditional music in Korea has led directly to a new movement for my Sinfonietta, due to premiere with the South Dakota Symphony in January.  Photo of tal nori (mask dance) in Hahoe Village, below.  At the same time, I’m composing a piece for pianist Jenny Q. Chai, titled Face of the Deep, integrating music with video of water surfaces – which fascinate both the artist and the angler in me.  More projects will keep me busy through the fall and winter.
