Program Note
Six Love Songs Of Kenneth Patchen was the first song cycle I composed. It was premiered by Campbell Ellsworth on a faculty concert at Walnut Hill School, where I directed music in the 1980s. The poetry served to inspire a new kind of freedom in my writing, so soon after my formal studies. At this time I was continuing to study privately with David Del Tredici, who certainly had an influence on these songs.
