Program Note

Our daughter Allegra was a very vocal baby, long before she could speak. I took great delight in cataloguing her various vocalises and decided to explore them imaginatively in music for piano.  Many years later, Portland Chamber Music Festival, in Maine, invited me to devise and host a children’s concert working with string quartet, and I decided to transcribe the piano suite into a much more compact suite for strings.  I felt as though I were revisiting not only my daughter’s infancy, but an earlier version of my composing self as well.

The four pieces in this suite trace my infant daughter’s day from morning to evening—her morning whoops, the growling of concentrated play, post-nap shouting, and the cooing sighs of her falling asleep at night—and imagine the whole mental and emotional state of this little child.
