Program Note
After recording my piece El Jaleo, and performing it many times, Yoonie Han invited me to compose more pieces based on John Singer Sargent’s paintings of women in iconic poses. Fumee d’Ambre Gris is inspired by a painting I saw at the Clark Institue in Williamstown, MA. Wafting incense, the figure’s meditative gaze, and Sargent’s virtuosic play of white on white, all contributed to this little piece.
