WINTER 2012
A busy season on every front! The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic recorded my Violin Concerto (Katrina) with Ittai Shapira, for whom I composed it, in early January. The sessions were thrilling—a fantastic orchestra, wonderful conductor in Neil Thomson, and the top-notch producer Chris Craker. The recording will come out on Champs Hill Records, paired with the Menotti Concerto, later this year.
Scenes from American Journal—a new, compact version of my 2007 work based on the poem by Robert Hayden—premieres in Harrisburg, PA at Market Square Concerts, with baritone Stephen Salters and The Lark Quarte+, on February 25.
And my String Quartet No.2 will be part of a family concert I am creating and hosting at the new Madison Theatre at Molloy College on Long Island. My colleagues Kaleidoscope—the Teaching Artists Ensemble of the New York Philharmonic—will perform.
And just ahead, the premiere of my one-act opera, My Last Duchess, with librettist Tom Dulack, based on poetry of Robert Browning. Orchestrating the work for nine strings has been a delightful sideline this season. It’s on a double bill with Robert Sirota’s The Clever Mistress—also based on a Renaissance tale. His is a comedy, mine is a tragedy—perfect double bill! Thanks to impresario and conductor Victoria Bond and Cutting Edge Concerts, we have an amazing cast, a beautiful production in the works, and even a Kickstarter site where you can help us make it all a reality!
